A Gut Reaction

I heard a  commercial for yogurt make the statement that 70% of our immune system is located in our gut.  In all of these almost 30 gut wrenching years of Celiac awareness, I have never heard this. Experiencing how absolutely EVERYTHING that goes wrong with my body, seems directly related to ingesting wheat.  It makes sense to me.I decided to do a dogpile.com search. Look what I found.

The crucial position of the gastrointestinal system is testified by the huge amount of immune cells that reside within it. Indeed, gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT) is the prominent part of mucosal-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) and represents almost 70% of the entire immune system; moreover, about 80% of plasma cells …..

Lots of words, big ones, acronyms and more run on sentences than even I write.  But the jest of it is- Yes our guts healthiness, or unhealthiness has A LOT to do with our who body’s wellness. By these numbers only 30% is NOT affected by our gut reaction.

So yes, the asthma, the rheumatoid arthritis, the lupus, the diabetes, psoriasis, the constant ear/sinus infection, the susceptibility to infection, the…. comes from a messed up gut, messed up from being coated with gluten that is impossible to digest.

In a dysbiotic gut terrain, immune function is necessarily compromised and opportunistic bacteria will tend to run rampant. The tight junctions in the gut become less, villi are atrophied, immunoglobulin levels are depressed, many antigens and pathogens can cross through into the bloodstream causing immune-mediated cascades, which can result in high levels of inflammation-inducing cytokines such as interleukins and TNF’s.

The yogurt company is not the first to discover this interesting, fact. These links have references on them dating back years .  This is known in the medical world, they just are not putting it all together.  The doctors have a lot to do, a lot to remember, a lot to study, a lot of sick people to see,  let’s help em out and get off of wheat all by ourselves eat some healing yogurt and teach em something.
